Pelvic Pain: a Difficult Condition to Talk About…

Written by:  Yuchin Chang, PT, DPT, OCS, CMTPT

Having pain in the pelvis area may be a difficult topic to talk about, even to your physician, and a lot of people suffer in silence.  Women are more susceptible to having pelvic pain, partially due to the trauma the pelvic floor experiences with childbirth.

When the muscles around the pelvis area become tight and painful, you can have pain in the lower abdominal region, genital, and groin region.  The tight muscles can also create urinary urgency and hesitancy, gas pain, rectal pain, constipation, painful sex, etc.  These conditions are very personal and often extreme social isolation, depression, and shame.

If you have pelvic pain, working with a physical therapist closely may help you to manage your pain more effectively.   Not only will the therapist work on the painful muscles but also provide insight on your movement, posture, and ways to cope with a flare up.  As a result, people often feel more empowered.

Working with a right physical therapist for your pelvic condition is crucial, since pelvic pain is often complex and requires advanced manual skills and training.  Our pelvic floor physical therapist, Dr. Chang, has advanced training related to female pelvic dysfunctions.

If you would like more information about treating pelvic pain, please call Professional Physical Therapy and Training at 973-270-7417.  Our offices are located within the YMCA locations in Madison and Summit, NJ.  You do not need to be a member of the YMCA to visit with us.
