Get a physiotherapy checkup

Get a physiotherapy checkup

Paul Kochoa, PT, DPT, OCS, CGFI

You go to your primary medical doctor for an annual checkup.  You go to your dentist for a checkup twice a year.  Why not go to a physiotherapist for a checkup?

Physiotherapists are movement specialists.  We hold doctoral degrees and licenses that allow us to be the first contact point for any physical issue.  Contrary to popular belief, in the state of New Jersey, you DO NOT need a prescription from a doctor to go see a physiotherapist.  We are doctors too and are primary medical providers for any movement issues that fall in our scope of practice.

If you exercise, play a sport, or generally move around a lot, you use your body.  Think about how often and how hard you use your body, and then think about how you take care of it.  Do you only see your dentist when your teeth hurt?  Do you only see your primary doctor when you are ill?  Annual and biannual checkups are integral in preventing a disease process or disorder from becoming a bigger problem.

As movement specialists, we are especially adept at the assessment and diagnosis of movement dysfunctions that create issues.  These issues don’t have to be pain.  You can be an athlete that moves and plays fine, but are moving inefficiently, and losing speed and power.  Not an immediate problem, but can lead to injury and be the difference between a win or a loss, or a personal best record.

Even if you have NO PAIN, you should get a checkup.  You use your body daily.  For elite athletes that demand their bodies perform at the highest level, they demand more and have regular checkups and assessments.  Why be different?  You too can get a movement assessment and catch any movement dysfunctions before they become major issues.
