Painful Scars after the Baby Comes: How Physical Therapy Can Help

Painful Scars after Baby Comes: How Physical Therapy Can Help

Written By: Dr. Yuchin Chang, PT, DPT, OCS

Having delivered a baby is just like finishing a marathon – you’re happy, excited, exhausted, and sore!  Whether women deliver a baby via c-section or vaginally, they are often too busy or exhausted to care for themselves.  Even if they intend to do so, they are usually left with very little instructions from their doctors for scar care (c section or episiotomy) when released from the hospital.

Just as physical therapists care for the scars on the knees and hips after operations, we treat c-section scar and episiotomy just the same.  With specific tissue manipulation techniques, we can mobilize the skin, fascia, and muscle around the scar. So, mothers can regain the flexibility of the tissue and be restriction free!

Not only can physical therapists help mothers to release the scar and muscle restrictions, we can also teach them how to properly strengthen the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles.  When the muscles are restricted and tight, they are often weak.  Having stronger abdominal and pelvic floor muscles, women can enjoy their motherhood more with less aches and pain!

Our pelvic floor therapist, Yuchin Chang, a board certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist, has advanced training on prenatal and postpartum issues and will help you develop a personalized plan to meet your needs.  We are located inside Madison and Summit YMCA and offer a comfortable, private one-on-one session. Stop by and call us at 973-270-7417  to see if we can help!
